Drone Threatens Prison Security, UK Establishes Anti Drone Expert Group

November 19, 2019

Last July, a British court sentenced an individual to prison for smuggling contraband using a four-axis drone. Now, the government has announced the formation of a new panel of experts to solve the problem nationwide. The new team will be composed of police and prison officials, mainly sharing information. Investigators will study smugglers' methods and drone selection and share data with forces across the country.

Prison chief Sam gyimah said drones pose a "clear" threat and the government is absolutely determined to crack down on illegal drug smuggling and cell phone access. The British government will capture and jail individuals who are involved in such criminal activities.

Daniel Kelly, the first British citizen sentenced to 14 months in prison last year, smuggled contraband into three prisons in five days using a four-axis drone. The UK government also released details of other drone smuggling incidents today. Contraband items trafficked include mobile phones, tobacco and psychoactive substances, such as synthetic drugs and spices.
